Drawing from the figure of the “masover,” Enguany gives body and substance to the complex social, geographic, economic, and rural reality of the Tarragona landscape. His work engages with his past and his family history connected to the role of masover from several generations, in a pictorial exploration of the material, sensory, and emotional imagination that embodies life at the mas in the region.
The artist starts from a rural life far from the glorified and romanticized view of the countryside, delving into the harsh reality marred by progress and agro-industrial exploitation. From this rawness, however, Enguany appeals to admiration and love for this marginal space: a space that, although harsh and often barren, is intensely rooted in what defines us.
Oriol Enguany studied the Higher Education Courses in Illustration and Applied Arts to the Wall at EADTarragona and works primarily with painting and drawing, noted for his sensitivity in color use, rawness, and expressive brushstrokes. He shows a special interest in decadent poetry and positive, cheerful irony, expanding his pictorial work through intimate and experiential narratives. In this way, he builds a conceptual and narrative universe that is both performative and evocative.
The exhibition ‘Masover’ can be visited until July 28 at the Espai L of the Casa Canals in Tarragona.
