Busts of the Race

Busts of the Race form part of a sculptural series with which Julio Antonio aims to sculpt representatives of the people, anonymous men and women, considered fundamental to the race, adopting an approach that was commonplace among the majority of representatives of the Spanish literary movement known as the Generation of 98, in particular his friends, the writers Ramón Gómez de la Serna and Eugenio Noel.

To find his models, in 1908 Julio Antonio began his journey throughout Spain, accompanied by Miquel Viladrich, seeking direct contact with the reality of the country, with people who transcended individuality to become an eternal present.

During 1909 he produced Minera de Puertollano (Woman Miner from Puertollano) and, the following year, Hombre de la Mancha (Man from La Mancha) and Minero de Almadén (Miner from Almadén).
