TARRACO VIVA: HOMES NUS, DONES VESTIDES

  • 25 May 2024
  • Hora: 12:30 h - 13:30 h

Talk: NAKED MEN, CLOTHED WOMEN. Kouroi and korai, early Greek sculptures

By Carmen Sánchez, professor of Art History (UAM)

Sculpture begins in Greece representing the naked body of beautiful generic and timeless beings: young men. Women exhibit embroidered dresses and jewelry, they are contingency and narrative. These statues have been found marking graves or as offerings in shrines. The reason for the surprising nude will be addressed in the talk, as well as the meaning of these sculptures that must be understood from the mentality of the society that produced them. Sometimes the splendid sculptures speak to us, exhorting us to look and be moved. An inscription on one of them says: "Man who walks in the countryside with his mind absorbed in his thoughts, stop and cry when you see Trasó's tomb".
